You have probably thought about this for years. You want to know how your parents met, what your father's first job was, what your grandmother's house looked like. You mean to ask. Then a holiday goes by, or someone gets sick, and it still hasn't happened.

It is hard to do because asking is awkward, and "Tell me about your life" gets you "Oh, there's not much to tell." Asking them to write it down doesn't work either: most people don't want to, and a form full of questions gets short answers. Tell Me Family does the asking for you. You send a link, they talk, and you keep what they said.

Four steps

  1. Choose who to interview. Tell us who it is and what to call them: Mom, Grandpa Joe, Aunt Rita.
  2. Choose what to talk about. Pick topics like childhood, work or how they met, or leave it open.
  3. The AI interviews and follows up. They press one button and talk. The AI asks about what they just said.
  4. Get the story and their voice. You get the original recording, a written story and a PDF to print.

The difference is the second question

The first answer to a question is usually short. The story tends to come after someone asks about a detail in it. That is the part most people find hard to do on the spot, and it's what the AI is built for. It listens for a name, a place or a time and asks about that.

A fixed list of questionsTell Me Family
What was your first job? What was your first job?
"I worked at Kessler's hardware store.""I worked at Kessler's hardware store."
What did you study in school?Who was Kessler, and what was it like working for him?

You stay in control too. If you are sitting together, you can pause and ask what to say next, or go back and redo an answer without starting over.

Common questions

Do my parents need to download anything?

No. You send them a link. They open it on their phone or computer, agree to be recorded and press a button to talk. There's no app and no account for them.

What does the AI actually do?

It asks one question at a time, listens to the answer, and picks up on a detail such as a name or a place to ask the next one. It then turns the answers into a written story using only what was said.

Who can hear the recording?

Only the account that started the interview, and anyone that person shares a link with. The person recorded can take back any answer or delete everything.

What if my parent is not comfortable with phones?

Sit with them and use your own phone. In that mode you see the controls and they only have to talk.

What happens after the free ten minutes?

The interview closes gently after the current answer. You can listen to everything and read the opening of the story. $49 unlocks the full story, the PDF, the mp3 and more interview time.
